In "Porn: Myths for the Twentieth Century," Dr. Robert J. Stoller, a UCLA professor of psychiatry, presents an ethnographic study of the adult heterosexual pornography industry.
Through interviews with performers and producers, including Bill Margold, Nina Hartley, and Kay Parker, Stoller explores the inner workings of the industry and the fantasies and motivations of its participants.
He posits that pornography serves as a vehicle for individuals to express rebellion against societal norms and personal grievances.
Stoller challenges common perceptions by suggesting that pornography does not solely degrade women, lacks reliable evidence linking it to increased sexual violence, and, excluding child pornography, causes minimal harm.
He concludes that pornography reflects societal values and mores more than it influences them.
