How it starts
In 1911 New York City, seventeen-year-old Frances Hallowell is a seamstress mourning her brother's mysterious death. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she is attacked, and a man ends up dead at her feet, seemingly by her hand. Before she can be arrested, she is whisked away to Haxahaven Sanitarium, which she soon discovers is a school for witches. At Haxahaven, Frances finds a sisterhood and learns to control her powers, but she is drawn to the mysterious Finn, who appears in her dreams and offers to teach her more powerful magic. As Frances delves deeper into her abilities, she attracts the attention of a dangerous leader who desires control over Manhattan's magic.
