How it starts

Wren has always known she’s a Given, marked by the gods to serve them in her twentieth year. She accepts this honor eagerly, believing it keeps the kingdom safe. But when she witnesses her best friend's brutal sacrifice at a Giving Ceremony, Wren is horrified and flees her village under the cover of darkness. Her plan is simple: escape the kingdom and stay alive. However, her journey takes an unexpected turn when she stumbles upon an injured, unconscious man in the woods. Driven by compassion, she heals him, only to discover he is a Hunter, tasked with returning Marked Ones like her to the gods. Bound by a moral dilemma and inexplicably drawn to Wren, the Hunter offers her a day's head start. Despite their growing connection, Wren must continue to run, knowing that when he catches her, she will do whatever it takes to escape again.
